Manan Desai opened a YouTube channel on 21 February 2009. The Comedy Factory, the collective he co-founded with Vidya Desai, opened its channel on 9 October 2011. The older channel, the one with his name on it, holds 382 videos and 112 thousand subscribers. The younger one holds 696 videos and 232,709,655 views. He had a head start on himself and gave it away, and every number that matters in his career now belongs to a company rather than to a person. That is unusual in stand up, where the whole economy runs on individual reach, and it is the reason Gujarati comedy has an industry rather than a handful of famous individuals.
The arc
01The national show he came off
In 2016 he was on Comedy Nights Bachao on Colors, the Hindi comedy format, appearing alongside Amruta Khanvilkar. In November 2016 the Times of India reported that both of them were out of the show. That is the standard regional comic's arc: get seen locally, get called to Bombay, get folded into a Hindi format, get replaced.
What is not standard is what he did next. He went back to a Gujarati-language product and scaled that instead. Nine years later the Gujarati-language show is playing ten countries and the Hindi television credit is a line in a filmography. The language that looked like the constraint turned out to be the moat.
02Two channels, and the smaller one has his name on it
Read the two channels as one decision. His personal channel opened on 21 February 2009 and has posted 382 videos. The Comedy Factory's opened on 9 October 2011, two months after the collective was founded, and has posted 696 videos carrying 232,709,655 lifetime views.
Founders in Indian comedy usually run it the other way, using the collective as a distribution arm for a personal brand. He inverted it, which is why his 343,318 Instagram followers look modest next to the reach of the thing he made. The follower count undercounts him by design, and he appears to have designed it.
03Four men talking nonsense in ten countries
The Lavari Show is an unscripted live Gujarati chat format he performs with Chirayu Mistry, Deep Vaidya and Om Bhatt. At a press conference in Ahmedabad in August 2025, marking fourteen years of the company, The Comedy Factory reported that the show had passed 100 million digital views and 87 live shows across 10 countries, with confirmed dates that month in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Singapore and Bangkok.
His own line from that announcement is worth quoting because he says the thesis out loud: "We never imagined four Gujarati guys talking nonsense on stage would become a global sensation. The Lavari Show is raw, real, and proudly Gujarati. We've proven that our language and culture aren't limitations, they're our greatest strengths." Those figures come from the company's own announcement and are not independently audited, which is worth holding in mind while also noting that the touring calendar behind them is public and bookable.
04The move from the stage to the page
The acting credits are the part everyone lists. He played Shahnawaz in Chor Bani Thangaat Kare in 2017, Ajit Bhai in Ventilator in 2018 and took a special appearance in Order Order Out of Order in 2019, plus a cameo in the Hindi film Made in China. Those are the credits of a comic who films well.
The 2023 entry is different. His filmography lists Bachubhai with the note that he co-wrote it with Chirayu Mistry, which is a screen credit rather than a screen appearance. A comic who starts writing features for other people to carry is a comic who has decided the format matters more than the face, and that is the same instinct that built the collective.
The work that matters
Choose this over the stand up specials. It is a format rather than an act, which means it can tour without him being the only reason anyone bought a ticket, and it is the piece of work that turned Gujarati-language comedy into an export rather than a domestic niche.
His filmography credits him as co-writer with Chirayu Mistry, and that is the entry that separates him from the comedians he came up with. Writing a feature you do not lead is the least glamorous credit available and the one that shows what he actually values.
Not the biggest Gujarati film he has been in, and the most telling. He plays Shahnawaz opposite Amit Mistry in a film written by four people, in a year when the new Gujarati cinema was still proving it could hold an ensemble. He was in the room for that proof.
Included precisely because it did not last. It is the control experiment: the one time his career ran on somebody else's Hindi format, and the reason everything he built afterwards stayed in Gujarati.
