Hukeykaran of Surat has 227,676 Instagram followers, the Ahmedabad production duo Aghori Muzik has 170,568, and Dhanji, whose 2023 debut album Ruab put Gujarati rap on national critics' lists, has 69,396. Outside rap, Santvani Trivedi is the largest independent Gujarati voice at 519,334 followers, and the Surat band The Tapi Project released the Gujarati single Varsaad with Raghu Dixit in 2024. Every count on this page was scraped from the live profile on 29 July 2026.
There is a version of Gujarati music that everyone can name. Film playback on one side, Navratri and dayro on the other, both of them enormous, both of them already covered elsewhere on this site. What almost nobody outside Gujarat can name is the third thing: people releasing Gujarati-language records that were commissioned by nobody, funded by nobody and attached to no festival. That scene exists, it is young, and right now it is mostly rappers.
Be honest about the size of it. This is not a thousand artists. It is a few dozen serious ones, concentrated in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara, and the ceiling is visible: the biggest independent Gujarati rapper on this page has fewer followers than a mid-tier garba singer. But the direction of travel is not in doubt. Aghori Muzik went from Instagram to composing on a Manasi Parekh film. Bandish Projekt went from club records to a Gujarati film soundtrack credit. The independent scene is now the talent pipeline for the film scene, which is exactly how it worked in every other Indian language before this one.

How this list was built
This page covers artists who release Gujarati-language or Gujarat-rooted music outside the film industry and outside the traditional folk and garba circuit. It deliberately does not repeat its sibling pages. Aditya Gadhvi, Kirtidan Gadhvi, Jigardan Gadhavi, Geeta Rabari, Kinjal Dave, Falguni Pathak and Hemant Chauhan sit on the Gujarati folk singers and garba artists page. Aishwarya Majmudar, Bhoomi Trivedi, Parthiv Gohil, Ishani Dave and Darshan Raval sit on the playback singers and music directors pages. None of them is repeated here even where they also release independent singles. Every entry was verified twice: the artist's live Instagram profile was scraped on 29 July 2026 for the follower count, the biography text and the presence of a verification badge, and wherever a claim touches a film, it was checked against that film's own soundtrack listing rather than the artist's press material. Three candidates were researched and dropped. Mihir Joshi was dropped because his records are in English and Hindi and he was born in Mumbai, which puts him outside the brief of this page even though he is the best known Gujarati name in Indian indie rock. Shyamal-Saumil were dropped because no Instagram account matching the duo could be confirmed, only an account with four followers, and no free licensed photograph exists. An artist listed on a Spotify Gujarati indie playlist under the name Mellowjay was dropped because the matching Instagram handle belongs to a different person entirely. Follower counts are a snapshot, not a scoreboard, and they will be wrong the week after you read this.
Gujarati hip hop, the loudest thing in the language right now
Seven artists, three cities, and a scene that went from bedroom uploads to film soundtrack credits in about six years.
1Hukeykaran
The largest independent Gujarati rap following belongs to Surat, not Ahmedabad, and it belongs to an artist with 112 posts. Hukeykaran's profile carries a verification badge, 227,676 followers, and a bio that reads Straight Outta Surat with a business email under it. The current release named on the profile is Baaghi 2, and the external link points to a Madverse artist page, which is a distribution platform rather than a label.
That combination tells you the shape of this scene. Two hundred thousand people follow an artist who posts about nine times a year, works with a self serve distributor and has no record company between him and the audience. Coverage of Gujarati hip hop tends to describe him as bar heavy, which in this language means the writing is doing the work rather than the production. Surat gets left out of the Gujarat culture story almost every time. On this page it is at the top.

2Aghori Muzik
Aghori Muzik is the crossover proof of this page. The Aum Mangalam Singlem soundtrack lists them as the performers of the two minute thirty five second title track, on an album otherwise composed by Sachin-Jigar. Two years later the Jhamkudi soundtrack credits its music to Kruz of Aghori Muzik, Shadaab Hashmi and Bandish Project, with Kruz and K.Deep also writing the title song alongside Priya Saraiya and Niren Bhatt. Both of those credits are on the films' own pages, not on the duo's.
Going from an Instagram handle to a lyric credit on a Manasi Parekh film in under three years is the fastest route anyone in Gujarati independent music has taken. The bio is four words of Gujarati and a phone number, which is the least corporate artist page you will find at 170,568 followers. It is also the only entry here whose work now sits inside the film songs list on this site.

3Siyaahi
Siyaahi is Aniket Bhat, and the most important line in his Instagram bio is the last one: founder of the Ahmedabad Hip-Hop collective. He took the OG Hustler award on MTV Hustle season 4, has 88,911 followers and a verification badge, and lists a manager and a management company, which makes him one of the few artists here with an actual apparatus around him.
The stage name came from a mistake. Reporting on him says a judge at a beat contest read the title of his first track, Siyaahi, as his name, and it stuck. He raps largely in Hindi with Gujarati threaded through it, which is why he sits here rather than on a pure Gujarati-language list, and his real contribution is structural. Starting a city collective in 2019 gave every rapper on this section of the page somewhere to perform before any promoter believed in the scene.

4Dhanji
Dhanji is the artist critics reach for when they want to argue that Gujarati rap is a real form and not a novelty. He is Jayraj Ganatra, from Ahmedabad, and he chose to rap in Gujarati at a point when the national scene ran on Hindi and Punjabi. Seven mixtapes preceded the 2023 debut album Ruab. Rolling Stone India named him in its Future of Music list for 2024. His Instagram bio is three Gujarati words meaning the Kanha of Amdavad, and his external link points to a publishing company named after a Ahmedabad neighbourhood.
Thirty two posts, 69,396 followers, no verification badge. That ratio is the whole argument. Where most artists on this page are converting reach into shows, Dhanji has converted records into critical standing, and the crowds at his gigs rap Gujarati back at him, which is not something that happened in this language ten years ago. He is the reason a Gujarati teenager can now imagine writing in Gujarati without it being a folk decision.

5Snappy Kaal
Sixteen posts. Twenty eight thousand seven hundred and ninety one followers. A profile that carries nothing but a management handle, a work enquiry email and a link straight to a Spotify album. Snappy Kaal is the cleanest example on this page of an artist who treats Instagram as a shopfront and puts everything else on the streaming platforms.
He shares a management company with Swara Oza, further down this page, which is worth noticing. Doozer Entertainment is quietly assembling a roster on both sides of the Gujarati independent line, rap and pop, and that is the first sign of an industry forming around a scene rather than a scene forming around an industry. When the managers show up, the money is about to.

6Bhadrankar
Six posts and twenty two thousand followers, which is the most extreme ratio on this page. Bhadrankar is Vadodara's entry in a scene otherwise split between Ahmedabad and Surat, his profile name is Bell Bottom Bhadri, and his bio lists the Vadodara crew 21 Streetz India and a separate handle for enquiries. The external link on the profile is a ticket page for a live show in Kolkata in August 2026.
That last detail matters more than the follower count. A Gujarati rapper from Vadodara selling tickets in Kolkata is the scene's first real export test, and it is happening on a profile with six posts on it. This is what a music economy looks like when the distribution is free and the constraint is live demand rather than radio.

7MC Tod Fod
Every scene has a first one, and Gujarati rap's first one is not alive to see what he started. Dharmesh Parmar, who performed as MC Tod Fod, was the Gujarati voice inside the Mumbai collective Swadesi. He appeared in Gully Boy. He died in March 2022 at the age of twenty four, which The Indian Express reported at the time as the result of a pre-existing heart condition. Swadesi's own account posted the news.
His profile is still live with 9,426 followers, the bio still reads Stick to your roots, and the last pinned link still points to a single called Yam. Every list of Gujarati rap that gets written now names him first, and the reason is simple: he was rapping in Gujarati on national platforms while the artists above him on this page were still in school. The scene did not inherit an institution from him. It inherited permission.

The bands and the producers
Four acts who came to Gujarati music from rock, electronica and session work, and who supply the scene most of its actual production.
8Bandish Projekt
Bandish Projekt is the electronic alias of the producer and multi-instrumentalist Mayur Narvekar, running since 1997, which makes it older than most of the rappers on this page. The project's own English Wikipedia entry, which reads as artist supplied material and should be treated that way, lists the 2009 album Correkt, festival appearances at Glastonbury and Bestival, and the Dakla Project, a folk sampling strand built on Gujarati ritual percussion. One Dakla release features the actor Maulik Nayak.
The verifiable Gujarati credit is on the Jhamkudi soundtrack, where the film's own page names Bandish Project alongside Kruz of Aghori Muzik and Shadaab Hashmi as the composers of the album. That is the sentence worth keeping: a producer who spent two decades exporting Indian percussion to European clubs came home and ended up on the soundtrack of a Gujarati horror comedy. The traffic between the independent scene and the film industry now runs both ways.

9Meghdhanush
Meghdhanush formed in December 2009 for a national original-songs contest called Rock Parva, finished in the top seven, and kept going. The current line-up runs to five: Jainam Modi on bass and vocals, Karan Patel on vocals and lead guitar, Priyesh Mehta on drums, Ishrat Kalavant on vocals and Ujjwal Rishi on lead guitar. Their debut album Mijlas came in 2017, the EP Folk Rang in 2018, and the profile currently pushes an album called Dareechey.
Their strongest claim is one most people miss. The Chhello Divas soundtrack, the two song album attached to the film that grew the Gujarati box office eightfold, is credited on that film's page to Meghdhanush as the album artist. An Ahmedabad rock band that made its name covering the Shaktiman theme scored the most commercially consequential Gujarati film of 2015. Nothing about that sentence sounds plausible, and all of it is on the record.

10The Tapi Project
Named after the river that runs through Surat, the band formed in 2014 around Swati Minaxi on vocals, Yogendra Saniyawala on guitar and lyrics, Gaurav Kapadia on drums and Biju Nambiar on keys and bass. In August 2024 they released Varsaad, a monsoon song sung in Gujarati with a Kannada passage from the Bengaluru folk fusion artist Raghu Dixit, which Rolling Stone India covered at the time.
The film connection is quiet but real: Swati Minaxi sings Ae Dard on the Hun Iqbal soundtrack, credited on that film's own page. The bio on the band's Instagram is nothing but tour dates, three of them in a single week across Haryana, Delhi and Ahmedabad. Eight thousand followers and a national touring circuit is the opposite economics to the rappers above them, and it is the only sustainable model any Indian indie band has ever found.

11Chirag Todi
The smallest following on this page belongs to the most credentialled person on it. Chirag Todi's Instagram bio reads musician, entrepreneur, educator, and lists a voting membership at the Recording Academy and selection as a Spotify RADAR artist. His album is called Bangers Only. He is building a venture called First Wav. He made his debut as a vocalist on a track called Walking On A Minefield.
Todi matters here for the same reason a session player matters anywhere: he is infrastructure. Ahmedabad has plenty of people who can write a Gujarati hook and almost nobody who can engineer, arrange and release it to a professional standard from inside the city. Five thousand followers is what that job pays in attention. The scene above him does not exist without people doing it.

Pop and folk fusion that never needed a film
Three singers whose entire careers are built on non-film releases, which in Gujarati is still the harder road.
12Santvani Trivedi
Half a million followers and five thousand four hundred posts, which is roughly four hundred times the posting volume of the rappers at the top of this page. Santvani Trivedi has built the largest independent Gujarati audience by simply never stopping: covers, folk fusion, original singles, live clips from Dhari and every other town on the circuit. Her profile line reads from Gujarat to global, and the enquiries number is right there in the bio.
She sits here rather than on the folk page because her catalogue is a release catalogue, not a festival career. Vadaldi Varsi and Vahal No Dariyo are the tracks people quote, and she posts originals like Henna as records with their own launch cycles. The line between folk fusion and Gujarati pop is thin and she lives on it, which is precisely why she is the biggest thing on this side of the line.

13Arvind Vegda
Arvind Vegda spent twelve years selling air conditioning before music paid. He has no formal training, learned harmonium under Narendra Rao, formed an orchestra in 2002 and started playing Navratri venues. In 2006, after the sudden death of Maniraj Barot, he was invited to perform in Ahmedabad and played Bhai Bhai for the first time. That track carried his career. The album Bhala Mori Rama followed in 2011, and he appeared on Bigg Boss season 9 in 2015.
He belongs on an independent list rather than a folk one because his hits are singles he made and released himself, not repertoire he inherited. There is a film credit too: the Chhutti Jashe Chhakka soundtrack credits him with the title track, at three minutes seven seconds, on an album composed by Kedar-Bhargav. Four thousand posts and 146,844 followers later, the marketing job clearly did not go to waste.

14Swara Oza
Swara Oza's Instagram bio is two words long and it is the most interesting two words on this page: GPOP singer. Not folk, not playback, not fusion. A genre label invented for a category that did not previously have a name, claimed by an artist with 113,729 followers and 744 posts, managed by the same company that handles Snappy Kaal.
Naming a thing is how a scene starts behaving like one. Gujarati music has always had labels borrowed from elsewhere, sugam sangeet, lok geet, playback, and none of them describe a young woman making contemporary pop in Gujarati for streaming platforms. She is described in coverage as experimenting with new sonic identities for regional music, which is a long way of saying nobody has a better word for it yet either.

The pipe the whole scene runs through
One entry, because in Gujarati music the distribution is currently more consequential than most of the artists.
15Jalso
Jalso is an app before it is anything else: free Gujarati music, garba, lok geet, classic film songs, spoken word and literature, on iOS and Android, with a podcast slate on top. Its Instagram line has shifted from music to conversations, it has 124,196 followers and 5,326 posts, and it posted its YouTube silver award for passing a hundred thousand subscribers. Trade coverage reports a partnership with Saregama, which is a reported claim rather than a verified one and is flagged as such here.
The reason it closes this page is on two film pages, not its own. The Kutch Express soundtrack, released 14 December 2022, carries the label Gujarati Jalso. So does the Laalo album from 2025. A Gujarati streaming startup is now the label of record for the soundtrack of a National Award winning film and the biggest devotional release in the language. That is not a media app supporting a scene. That is a scene acquiring its own distribution.
