Almost every writer this industry trains uses a Gujarati credit as a passport to Mumbai, and he is the one who used his to build a company that keeps working in Ahmedabad.

The standard shape of a Gujarati screenwriting career is now well established: one good film at home, then Hindi. Niren Bhatt did it, Karan Vyas did it, Mikhil Musale and Hardik Mehta did it. Vipul Sharma has four films dated between September 2024 and January 2027 and not one of them is in Hindi. What makes him worth a page is not just that he stayed, it is what staying let him build. Read the credit blocks he publishes for each release and the same names return: the same leading man, the same cinematographer, the same editor, the same chief assistant director who also casts the film. Regional cinema is normally assembled per project out of whoever happens to be free that month. Sharma runs something closer to a repertory company, which is the only structure that lets a small industry improve instead of merely repeat.

The arc

01A murder in a village that actually exists

Ratanpur released on 16 March 2018 across Gujarat and Maharashtra, a mystery drama about Gaurav Sharma, an honest IPS officer newly posted to a village where a murder case takes apart everything he believes about his job. The unit shot on location in the real Ratanpur to keep the place recognisable, the score is by Jatin and Pratik, and Sunidhi Chauhan sang for it. Tushar Sadhu plays the lead.

One thing needs saying plainly rather than smoothed over. The English Wikipedia record credits Sharma as the director of Ratanpur and credits the screenplay to Shailesh Dodia. An IMDb-sourced credits database also attaches his name as a writer to Deshbook, Shubh Aarambh and Order Order Out of Order, but that is a database claim without a second source behind it, so this page treats the direction of Ratanpur as the verified early credit and leaves the rest as unconfirmed.

02The same twelve names, film after film

Frendo released on 13 September 2024 for Veer Bansari Films, produced by Dr Bansari and Raju Radia, written and directed by Sharma. Shubh Mangal Dhamal followed on 22 May 2026 for Vraj Films, produced by Sanjay Soni and Krupa Soni, again written and directed by him. Two different banners, two different sets of money, and a crew that barely changes.

Tushar Sadhu leads both. Jay Pandya, Ragi Jani and Prashant Barot are in both. Sree Coomar shoots both, Roopan Acharya cuts both, Sahil Patel is chief assistant director and casting director on both, Mit Soni is on art and Aakash Tapodhan on hair and make up for both. That is not a coincidence of availability. It is a unit that has learned each other's shorthand, which is worth more to a low budget film than any single line item on the schedule.

03The numbers he puts out himself

Shubh Mangal Dhamal is a wedding comedy with Tushar Sadhu and Vyoma Nandi, released by Rupam Entertainment with a Saregama Gujarati soundtrack. The production reported about Rs 29 lakh on the opening day, more than 5,250 tickets booked in the first 24 hours, houseful shows through the opening weekend and a run that reached a fourth week. Every one of those is a figure published by the film's own team rather than an audited return, and it should be read that way.

What the cadence shows is not scale, it is continuity. Bicharo Bachelor went into cinemas on 2 January 2026, Shubh Mangal Dhamal on 22 May 2026, and the title Shreeman Sandwich has already been announced for 14 January 2027. Three releases inside thirteen months in an industry that puts out fewer than thirty features a year is a working factory, not a hobby.

04Why staying is the argument

Everyone in Gujarati cinema knows what a break looks like. It looks like a National Award, then a call from Mumbai, then a Hindi credit and a much larger fee. There is nothing wrong with taking it, and the writers who did have made the industry look serious from the outside. The cost is that the people who train here rarely stay long enough to train anybody else.

Sharma is the counterweight. His films do not win jury prizes and none of them will be on a festival programme. What they do is put money through Gujarati crews on a predictable schedule, give the same actors bigger parts each time, and give a chief assistant director enough consecutive films to become somebody's head of department. An industry needs at least one person willing to treat the language as a destination. He is currently it.

The work that matters

Ratanpur 2018

The least like the rest of his shelf and the only one with an independent encyclopedic record. A murder in a village rather than a comedy, shot in the real place it is named after, and the film where Tushar Sadhu first carries something of his.

Shubh Mangal Dhamal 2026

Not the funniest and not the first. It is the one where the whole apparatus is visible at once: same lead, same cinematographer, same editor, same chief assistant director, a fourth week in cinemas, and a producer prepared to back a writer-director working purely in Gujarati in 2026.

Questions people ask

What films has Vipul Sharma directed?

Ratanpur in 2018, Frendo on 13 September 2024, Bicharo Bachelor on 2 January 2026 and Shubh Mangal Dhamal on 22 May 2026. A fifth, Shreeman Sandwich, has been titled and dated by his production for 14 January 2027. All of them are in Gujarati.

Did Vipul Sharma write Ratanpur?

The English Wikipedia record credits him as the director and credits the screenplay to Shailesh Dodia. A separate credits database lists him as a writer on other Gujarati films of that period, but without a second source those claims are not treated as confirmed here.

How did Shubh Mangal Dhamal perform?

Its production reported about Rs 29 lakh on the opening day, more than 5,250 tickets booked within 24 hours, and a run that reached a fourth week in cinemas. Those figures come from the film's own team and are not audited box office returns.

Who does Vipul Sharma work with repeatedly?

Tushar Sadhu leads his films, with Jay Pandya, Ragi Jani and Prashant Barot recurring in support. Behind the camera, Sree Coomar shoots, Roopan Acharya edits and Sahil Patel works as chief assistant director and casting director across both Frendo and Shubh Mangal Dhamal.

Has Vipul Sharma worked in Hindi?

Not so far. Every documented credit is a Gujarati film, which makes him unusual among the writer-directors this industry has produced in the last decade, most of whom moved to Hindi within a few films of their first success.
