Mitra Gadhavi

Chhello Divas premiered on 20 November 2015 across 231 screens worldwide. Krishnadev Yagnik wrote and directed it, cast eight people with almost no film credits between them, and had them speak in the actual register of Ahmedabad college students. Gadhvi played Loy. The film ran more than fifty days and grossed a reported Rs 18 crore, and the producers claimed a further Rs 5 crore of losses to a censor copy that leaked online before release, a case in which two clerks at the Entertainment Tax Commissioner office in Gandhinagar were arrested.

He had come to it through a stage career of more than a decade, which is not the standard route for a college comedy. That background is the reason the interesting half of this filmography exists at all.

Shu Thayu? opened on 24 August 2018 in 212 locations, Yagnik's rebuild of the Tamil film Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, with Gadhvi as Chirag alongside Malhar Thakar and Yash Soni. It took a reported Rs 5.11 crore in its first weekend, Rs 15.46 crore in eleven days and Rs 21 crore across the run. The same year, Umang Vyas cast him as Bhotiyo in Ventilator opposite Jackie Shroff and Pratik Gandhi, which was a Gujarati adaptation of the Marathi film Priyanka Chopra had produced.

Then 3 Ekka on 25 August 2023, directed by Rajesh Sharma for Anand Pandit and Vaishal Shah, with Gadhvi as Bhargav. A reported Rs 12.56 crore in the first week and Rs 26.11 crore in twenty days made it the second highest grossing Gujarati film of all time. Eight years after a college comedy, the same three men could open a picture on their names. Vaishal Shah, who produced the first and the last of those three, treats that casting as an asset rather than a coincidence, and he is right.

Anita, directed by Sushma Khadepaun, went to the Venice Film Festival in 2020 with Gadhvi playing Vikram. The Indian Express reported it on 6 August 2020 and The Wire ran an interview with Khadepaun and Ivan Ayr about their two films heading to the festival. It is the first Gujarati film to be screened there, a distinction no Gujarati feature has taken since.

This is the fact the commercial CV keeps burying. Gujarati cinema's relationship with international festivals is thin and mostly runs through Pan Nalin and Abhishek Shah. The single hardest festival credential in the language belongs to a short film, and the actor carrying it spends the rest of his year in comedies that gross twenty crore. Two years earlier he had led and written another short, Karnamu, which is where that instinct first shows up on paper.

His Wikipedia biography calls him an actor, writer and lyricist, in that order, and the filmography backs the second and third words rather than assuming them. He is credited as main lead and writer on Karnamu in 2018. He wrote and directed the play Listen, We Need To Talk. Theatre, he told the Times of India in 2018, remains his first love, which is the kind of line actors say and almost none of them keep proving.

In April 2021, during the second COVID wave, he used his following to amplify SOS calls from patients across Delhi and Gujarat, which The Quint covered in a piece on social media accounts doing triage work the state was not doing. He had tested positive himself in January 2022. It is a small entry on a filmography page and it is the only thing on it that had nothing to do with a release date.

Hun Iqbal in 2023 as Senior Inspector Mohan Joshi, a suspense thriller that went to streaming. Lagan Special as Dr Jogi, Fakt Purusho Maate as Kirtan and The Great Gujarati Matrimony as Raghav, all in 2024. Mithada Maheman and Bhram in 2025, the second of them a suspense thriller about a woman with dementia at the centre of a murder investigation, directed by Pallav Parikh and running two hours and eleven minutes. A cameo in Sikandar the same year, as a quarry manager in an A. R. Murugadoss film built around Salman Khan.

The pattern is worth naming. He does not seem to be running a plan to get to Bombay. He is running two careers in Gujarati at once, one that funds the other, and the second one has already produced the only Venice credit the language has.
